When the time is short and you need refreshing break from the daily routine....Kokan is best place you can think of. You will find clean beaches, helping people and serene nature. If you are a maharashtrian you should not miss it any way !
Me and my husband had 3 nights 4 days trip around kokan. We started from pune and its about 700 km total drive. But the road conditions are good enough that gives you pleasure to roam around... yes don't be surprised I am talking about roads in Maharashtra state only.
We started with Guhagar, must heard place. Its about 150km from Umbraj fata which is on the National highway 04 that is Mumbai-Bangalore high way. The straight road to chiplun and about 10 km ahead for guhagar. Its a small place, hardly of thousands of people. It took around 5 hours to reach. This is well know kul-daivat of Kokanastha and which you could get from the name plates of the houses.. most of here are Khare, Gogate, Agashe, Limaye, Joglekar. We stayed at Durga Pearl Niwas which is 5 min walking away from beach. The place is clean and famous for maharashtrian traditional sweet "Modak" which we ordered for dinner. If you are a sea food lover then this place has many mouthwatering dishes. Prowns currey, prowns masala, rava fry paplet or surmai masal are awesome with their typical fresh aromas... The beach is beautiful, clean and watching sunset would be a delight here. We had suspected atmosphere to be humid but its was cold and nice. We could also do beachside bonfire which was different experience. The vyadeshwar temple, urfatya ganapati, durgamata temple and life water spring which is worth watching.
We moved to velneshwar which about 20 km from guhagar. The location of MTDC resort here is perfect to stay.. there are other options available too. This is a small place. Temple here is clean and quite just beside the beach. You can easily find place to stay here at around RS 1200 for a day. If you enjoy the silence then this is best place for you. Stay calm and relax with nature.
About 15km ahead towards Hedvi 'Baman ghal' is located. Due to heavy waves the rocks are broken and it has created natural sculpture. Must visit place. Then we moved to ganapatipule throuhg Jetty.. new experience. Its big boat/ship which will carry loats of cars, two wheelers and passangers across sea. We reached Devgadh and visited light house there. its build in British times and you will be lucky if you get to see it from inside.
About 20 km ahead is Ganapatipule. Ganapati mandir near beach, pradakshana marg is different from any other mandir. We stayed here in hotel Ocean Retreat and it was truly following the name. All rooms are sea facing. Food is teasty here, stay is clean and calm. You can walk down to Mandir, beach. In jan first week they charged us Rs 1200 per room.. I guess it was fair deal. Hotel Sameer is famous here for the kokan special fish preperations. Fish carry, rice, rava fish and solkadhi could be best choices.
We enjoyed and had great time.. look forward to get back here.. as "Leaves" permits :) Best of break !
